How to Import a Car from Dubai to Nigeria (2026)

Step-by-step: buying a car in Dubai for Nigeria. The 12-year age rule, the July 2026 levy cut, Green Tax, shipping to Lagos and documents.

Dubai is a popular source of “tokunbo” (foreign-used) cars for Nigerian buyers. Before you pay a Dubai seller, make sure the car can legally enter Nigeria and that you know the full landed cost. Last checked: 21 October 2026.

Step 1: Check the age rule

Nigeria’s import prohibition list bans used motor vehicles more than 12 years old from the year of manufacture (Nigeria Trade Portal). Check the manufacture date on the VIN plate, not just the model year in the advert.

Step 2: Understand the 2026 levies

From 1 July 2026, the import levy on used vehicles fell from 15% to 5%, and the overall duty on fully built passenger vehicles was reduced. A new Green Tax surcharge of 2–4% applies to petrol cars with engines above 2,000cc (Business Post report on the Nigeria Customs Service update). Industry sources say exchange-rate swings and port charges still have a big effect on final costs, so get a current estimate from a licensed clearing agent.

Step 3: Choose the right car

  • LHD: Nigeria drives on the right, and most GCC-spec cars in Dubai are left-hand drive.
  • Engine size: 2,000cc or less avoids the Green Tax surcharge on petrol cars.
  • History: ask for an accident report and an independent inspection in Dubai.

Step 4: Shipping from Jebel Ali to Lagos

Dubai exporters publish roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) quotes of roughly USD 1,200–1,800 and about 18–22 days at sea from Jebel Ali to Lagos; container shipping costs more (exporter guide). Port handling, clearing and inland transport are extra. Always get a written quote.

Step 5: Paperwork

  • Commercial invoice and proof of payment
  • Bill of lading
  • UAE export certificate / deregistration
  • Form M and PAAR via your Nigerian bank and agent
  • Insurance certificate

Step 6: Pay safely

  • Deal with licensed Dubai businesses and check their trade licence.
  • Pay by bank transfer to a company account that matches the invoice.
  • Never pay a personal account you can’t verify, and be wary of prices far below market.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import a right-hand-drive car to Nigeria?

Nigeria drives on the right and LHD is the norm. Confirm current rules with the Nigeria Customs Service before buying any RHD vehicle.

Does the 12-year rule use model year or manufacture date?

The prohibition list refers to the year of manufacture. Check the VIN plate and documents, not just the advert.

Do I need to travel to Dubai?

No. Many buyers use a trusted exporter and an independent inspection. Insist on detailed photos and video, verified documents and payment to a company account.

How long does clearing take in Lagos?

It varies with port congestion and paperwork. Ask your clearing agent for a current estimate and make sure all documents are ready before the car arrives.

Is container shipping safer?

Containers protect the car better and suit high-value cars or several cars together. RoRo is usually cheaper for a single standard car.
